Muscle relaxants are a common prescribed medication for lower back pain patients. About 80% of people worldwide will experience low back pain at least once in their lives, and 23% of them will continuously experience muscle setbacks.
But did you know what leads you to take them? It’s not the first line of defense…
Muscle relaxers are prescribed as a second line of defense to treating your lower back pain when the following drugs prove ineffective:
- Nonsteroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
- Opioids analgesics
In this article, I will get to the bottom of what natural muscle relaxants for back pain you’ll need to have a look into.
But first things first, lets clear the air and find the answer to one question.
Why Natural Though?
Have you thought why your body’s reacting the way it has been? Supplying it with the wrong source can actually do more damage then good.
When a more natural process is able to take place, it will block the enzymes from causing you to swell up and have inflammation. But I go head on so you don’t need to.
After uncovering the following steps, you’ll better understand why natural remedies work way better and are effective. Here’s what you’ll happily take away:
- What are muscle relaxants
- The natural ones
- The top 5
- How you can take action
Lets jump right in!
What Is A Muscle Relaxant?
You got Questions, and I have questions with answers.
Does this scenario sound familiar?:
It may seem like a no-brainier, you throw out your back, and now you;re going to need some serious medication, right?
Hold the Piper right there!
History and constant research proves that this “OLD” method will lead to a dead end, it stalls the “healing and preventing process.”
As you read on, you’ll learn why muscle relaxants may not be the best choice, and hopefully have you winning the fight against your lower back pain.
Open your mind, and let the rest take control…
The 2 biggest questions you should be asking yourself if you didn’t have the answer to yet already are:
- What are muscle relaxants?
- How can I benefit from them GREATLY?
Can you and I relate for a quick second? We’ve all felt it – the all too familiar “tweak” or spasm in our lower back. Usually coming from unorthodox, or lose movement. Such as:
- Reaching down to tie your shoes
- Picking up heavy weight
- Awkward twisting and bending
You twist and suddenly – OUCH!! You’re struck with an instant flash of pain seemingly feeling like it can knock you out.
What’s your next move? Treatment right? It’s common to turn for pills. But these pills I’m about to reveal to you can actually do more damage than good.
While they provide temporary pain relief, it can have substantial side effects throughout your whole body. Side effects include:
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Weakness
- Fatigue
Let’s take a look at your options and get a quick in depth look at their functions.
- Cyclobenzaprine
- Soma
- Baclofen
- Metaxalone
- Orphenadrine
These have been proven to be dangerous for patients with
- heart conditions
- liver disease.
One addictive drug is Soma. It’s highly addictive and since your here to find better solutions, I know you will not head into that direction.
Reason #1: Don’t muscle relaxers just mask the pain?
Simply put, yes. Under the influence of these drugs, your actual movement causes further damage, but how would you be able to tell? You can’t.
Reason #2: TREMENDOUS side effects
As I talked about earlier, these medications can tag on potential health concerns. What does this look like?
- potential liver damage
- increased heart issues
- addiction
- dizziness
- Weakness
- Drowsiness
- Weakness
The day to day side effects might seem far less than liver damage, and heart issues, but in quite fact it’s not. Under the influence, you become limited.
You are at an increase of falls and other injuries. But the scariest component, not being able to operate a vehicle. So much for getting to your destination!
Take these two out of the picture, and what are you left with? Very little to nothing – and I like to say:
“NADA”
Not the right solution if you ask me.
Reason #3: Muscle relaxers effect top to bottom, your entire body.
Like most drugs, muscle relaxers are not able to pinpoint the exact location where your muscle group is affected.
Rather than one muscle, all of your muscles become relaxed, numbing you till you can’t feel an absolute thing! Did you know that when under the influence of muscle relaxants, and you constantly move, your movements are aggravating the actual root of the cause? Leaving you in less mobility when the relaxant wears off.
Let’s consider the better alternatives. The Natural muscle relaxers.
Your Body Craves Natural Muscle Relaxants
Now, I understand that for many people muscle relaxants are a necessity, but for those that can cope, there are alternatives.
And get this, these top 5 alternatives I’m about to show you not only have the power to diminish your muscle tension, but can all alone drive Opioids and most Over the counter(OTC) medicines! Without further comments, here they are:
- Willow Bark. People have been using willow back to ease their inflammation – which is the cause of muscle aches and pains for centuries. It contains a chemical known as salicin, and ingredient similar to aspirin.
- It is sold as an herb that you can brew like for tea. It also comes in a liquid supplement, or capsule form.
- Capsicum frutescens. These are commonly known as cayenne peppers.
- Found in a topical form(cream), and ointment.
- Arnica Oil.
- Applied to your skin in the form of an oil, cream, ointment, salve, liniment. Arnica helps bring rich nutrient blood circulation, and stimulates the flow of white blood cells.
- Essential oils. Peppermint oils, olive oil, and Lemongrass are all great options.
- Peppermint oils are great at smoothing out your muscles, helping you with post and pre-exercise activity.
- Cannabis Oil. Cannabis made my list because until recently it is proven to be effective.
- Inhibits the neural transmitters in your brain. It has the ability to relieve chronic pain and inflammation.
6. Magenesium. Okay, this is a HUGE one, and the reason is that we almost all of lack with a magensium deficiency. Even the littlest amount in our body is enough to cause you to have muscle pain. Let’s talk about how you can consume it, and where to find them
- Bannanas
- Legumes
- Almonds
- brown rice
You can also get magnesium by supplementing, which makes for a quick and ease of access.
Next Alternative:
- Epsom Salt Bath. This is a great way to get your stress levels down, and increase your magnesium levels, plus it ads a great way to use heat to calm down your muscles and promote relaxation, and better blood circulation.
7. Vitamin D. Don’t sweat if you are lacking Vitamin D, the average person doesn’t get enough Vitamin D in their day, and if you are this person, you can quickly get back on track with a few tweaks. First let’s see which foods you can eat:
- Eggs
- Fish
- milk
- Beef liver
- Cheese
- Orange Juice
Also, don’t forget about the sun!
What if you can’t squeeze in a bite, what should you do?….Supplement Instead. Vitamin D supplements come in the form of:
- Liquids
- Capsules
- Tablets
8. Cayenne Pepper. Immediately My mind goes to Capsaicin, which is a substance that is found in cayenne pepper, and wait until you hear where else you can find it easily in, but first…
This is great for people with:
- Fibromylagia and
- Rheumatoid arthritis
You can add Cayenne Pepper to your foods like grilled Shrimp or things like A Hot Chocolate Drink. And also you can find them in:
- A Capsule form
- and as a cream
Let me tell you, I love every option above, but by far the most common and most preferred among people just beginning and most experienced, always have a cream rub.
9. BlueBerry Smoothies. Can you taste the sweetness of that riped Nutritious Blueberry fruit? Another Spectacular way of relaxing and removing your muscle pain is by eating blueberries. But not just any, Blueberry Smoothies!
This is one of my favorite choices only because Blueberries are my favorite fruit, and C’mon, how can you not like Blueberries?(Unless you are allergic or for medical reasons, I understand).
A recent study fron NCBI states that the New Zealand blueberry consumption was able to neutralize and eliminate exercise-induced muscle damage. How?
Like Watermelons, Blueberries have Strong antioxidant proerpties that are proven to decrease your oxidation levels of stress and inflammation.
10. Red Cherry Juice. Are you an athlete? Or maybe you just happen to have a LONG marathon coming up, and you probably do or don’t know yet that you will need a muscle relaxant to take care of you before and after the event…
Cherry Juice will beat the inflammation and muscle pain that is so common to runners. In Track, and After soccer games, I would always eat cherries afterwords, but it was not until I really hurt my back that I realized Cherry Juice was the way to go!
Drinking Tart Juice will minimize your post-run pain which is great because you don’t want to have muscle spasms, and cause future induced muscle pain. Plus, the antioxidant and ant-inflammatory properties in the fruit itself will help relax your muscles naturally, a WIN WIN.
11. Chamomile. Keep a Natural Remedy Mentality, and you’re going to continue to come across the word “Herbs”. The thing is, Herbs are simply the best remedy and should be the immediate course of action for pain, and they can easily substitute:
- NSAIDS
With Chamomile, it’s an ancient Chinese “Lost” Herb, and I say lost because most people are not aware of it, and it’s underused. It’ll treat a variety of ailments, including muscle spasms. On a Smaller level, inside of Chamomile you’ll expect to find:
- 36 Flavanoids, which is a fancy word for compounds that have strong anti-inflammatory properties.
This is where the most therapeutic part comes into play…
You can massage it! Massaging with essential oils are the best way to go, chamomile essential oil exactly. And if you want an alternative for all you Tea Fanatics, you can drink Chamomile Tea to help relax your sore muscles. Give it a shot, you will not be dissapointed!
12. Massage. Staying on the hot topic of Massages, yes you can use Chamomile Essential Oils, but did you know you had other options?
Why disguise the pain when you have such a great natural solution like going in for a massage or just doing it from the comfort of your home. When you get a great massage from a licensed therapist, he or she can do the works on your whole body or just the area of your pain.
13. Sleep. The Best one by far has to be regulating your sleep cycles, and making sure you get enough rest. There is such a thing as bad rest, so avoid sitting on your couch, or laying in your bed for longer than 15 minutes at a time, this can cause your back to further get sore, and cause more muscle spasms and cramping down the line.
Sleeping is the most natural solution by far in this list, and when you’re doing it, make sure to:
- Get LOTS of sleep
- Drink Plenty of Nutritious fluid, like water and Vitamin D
- Don’t overwork your muscles
A quick way for most of us with Acute and Pre-mature Chronic lower back pain is to use Ice and Heat Packs too.
I Choose The Natural Way
What’s more secure than knowing someone who’s already been in your situation, knowing how well these natural revilers worked. But it all didn’t start on the right foot…
About 4 years ago, I had the most aching pains. My inflammation kept coming back and forth like a fly you couldn’t swat away. It all happened specifically in my L3-L4 vertebral discs, and hips. My mobility was limited, and I couldn’t twist, and far more, bend down to reach the boxes I needed to pick up at work. I didn’t dare to move in any direction! A matter of bad fortune?
No… I fell hard to the ground from a soccer game, and that’s how it all started. I have to admit, I started off right away with Over the counter(OTC) painkillers to muscle relaxants, and most notably, they were not natural and safe.
I digested capsules for about 2 and a half years. Saying I was dependent, is to say the least. This pain was on and off between an 8 and 10, no thanks to the constant inflammation.
But then it all changed.
My massage therapist introduced me to muscle relaxants. She told me what the other 80% of people on some form of Opioids and OTC drugs did not know…
Essential oils can fix me. She let me borrow a couple different muscle relaxant properties, and I went right to work that night. Before I went to bed, I combined my natural muscle relaxants with the pain in my lower back is was getting, and I combined it with a few simple exercises, and in a matter of seconds, I was on my way to a restful night.
I found my right relief, and it came in the form of a cream. I kid you not my pain decreased from constant aches, joint, and muscle pain in a week. I reaped the benefits greatly from everything Penetrex had to offer. It allowed me to still continue to do all the things at work, and inside my house without the side effects.
Take The Natural Approach And You’ll See Why
Dealing with lower back pain on a daily basis can be:
- very frustrating
- challenging
When your pain is excruciating and so overwhelming that my god you can’t get out or into bed. The hardship really settles in when you can’t enjoy the things you love. It is time for a change.
Physical therapy is an option, and so is taking herbal supplements. But how do you know to take the right approach for you?
Natural muscle relaxants found in oils such as essential oils give you more than just a painless muscle, you’ll get the benefits of feeling much more relaxed mentally.
I want to reiterate that it’s common for people to turn to bad muscle relaxants, and although they shouldn’t be a primary use, they only bring a short term relief. You have to really ask yourself like I have:
Are they natural or not?
General muscle relaxants for lower back pain will mask your pain, and bring you side effects you do not deserve.
It’s best to take the right actions for your own level of pain by measuring your exact pain points. If you need to use a muscle relaxant I’d start off with SOMA. It brings a greater relief. But after a short use, take the second road, and look into an alternative like Essential Oils.
These are a great alternative for painkillers, and can be easily ready made for when you get home. I’ll arrive home and get my oils set up in a diffuser, and follow it up with massages at night before bed. I have my partner to thank for that.
“The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness.”
